HP 4951C – Part 3

Fixing the signs of time

Finally I got everything delivered. A couple of caps, a new, hopefully quieter fan and of course the RIFAs which were the reason to pull everything apart.

Putting all the caps in is a nice and easy job (just notice – they are all oriented polarity wise in the same direction – nice one). Also the RIFAs are not a big deal.

The new fan is a drop in replacement – just needed to transplant the plug to the new one. Any yes – it is definitely quieter.

Also the new battery is pin-compatible. I did not change the charging circuit as it pretends to be a drop in replacement according to the data sheet of Varta – although it is NiMH instead of NiCd.

Was it worth it?

I tested all the caps and as you can see, one unidentified bad cap was found.

But all the other caps were still good hence HP used high quality 105° ones in the past.

The second RIFA (the Y2) one had also cracks it in, but was not blown…but I guess this would have been the next fail.

Putting it all together…and tadaaaaa…it still works.

Of course I gave the case and everything else a very good clean while it was separated from the electronics and the CRT tube.

What’s next?

I still struggle to get the Async Terminal Application of the 4951C to work. I used every hint I could find, but still „Application Denied“ which points back to a copy protection scheme.

However I have to pause my efforts here for a while because a new beauty (which is not that pretty anymore) arrived in town: a 4957A I was able to acquire from France.

This one will keep me busy at it is in pretty bad shape. But this is something for the next post.
